PMR is a mindfulness technique known to help people release tension commonly associated with stress from their body. For best results, you are encouraged to practice this skill 2 times a day. Often, my clients find this a helpful skill to use either when transitioning from duty to home life or when they’re trying to get ready for bed.

This skill is often useful to those who find their daily life interrupted by troubling thoughts or memories. Sometimes, you may hear this labeled as “hyperarousal.” You can use this skill to help bring you back to your current moment and regain control of your mind and help support your functioning.

The life in public service can feel emotionally draining and even pointless at times. You folks see so much of the same patterns played over and over, so this perspective is to be expected. BUT, it’s also important to shift your thinking to recognize that you DO GOOD WORK EVERY DAY. Sometimes we just have retrain our minds to look for the good. This skill also adds in deep-breathing to help regulate your nervous system. Doing these two skills together helps builds resilience. Make this a part of your daily routine and see how it affects your performance.
